Abstract

E-coal is a unique online coal trade intermediary platform that connects sellers and buyers of coal. It is also a typical example of how an internet platform can also be used to shape traditional heavy industries in China. This case shows how E-coal transform and upgraded by supply chain re-engineering and business model innovations step by step, from a traditional coal trade firm to an online coal trade platform, and then to a coal industrial ecosystem at last. This case focuses on three key questions: first, how to re-engineer traditional supply chain by ICT? Second, how to use supply chain re-engineering and integration to support business model innovation? Third, in the process of platformization, how to design roles of different platform participants and arrange resources with them to achieve a value co-creation ecosystem. This case guides students to understand the strategies, tools, challenges and solutions of supply chain re-engineering and business model innovation in the process of traditional firms’transformation and upgrading.
