Abstract

Along with technological innovation and consumption upgrading, the retail industry is undergoing profound changes. In October 2016, Jack Ma first proposed the concept of "new retail", pointing out that in the next ten to twenty years, new retail would replace e-commerce as the trend. In March 2017, Zhang Jindong put forward the concept of "smart retail", announcing officially Suning''s entry into the competition. He further launched the "smart retail development" strategy at the end of 2017. Liu Qiangdong also put forward JD.com''s "borderless retail" strategy in July 2017, which further heated up the competition. After nearly two years of implementation, whether they will succeed or fail remained to be tested by the market. Suning started from offline retail, and gradually developed online and O2O retail, becoming one of China''s retail giants. Its development can be considered as the epitome of China''s retail industry. With its development, Suning has experienced digital transformation and accumulated its own technological strength. In the new retail era, Suning is competiting with Alibaba and JD.com, which are born with Internet genes. Suning put forward smart retail strategy, and the layout is around "Internet-based scene" and "intelligent supply chain". What should Suning do next? We need to carefully review how Suning developed step by step along with the change of times. More importantly, it is necessary to recognize the similarities, differences and essence of new retail, intelligent retail and boundless retail. Compared with other retail enterprises, how should Suning give play to its own competitive advantages.
