Abstract

China’s mobile phone handset industry had seen tremendous growth since the first analog mobile phone appeared in Guangzhou in 1987. This industry note describes the development, macro-economic environment, market demand, competition and future trends in this industry. It also illustrates the growth of the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturers in China. Since the Chinese mobile handset industry was in the midst of a painful transitional period in 2007, domestic firms needed to think about how to survive and compete with global rivals.
