Abstract
The world’s first new energy vehicle electric (NEV) was produced over 100 years ago, but did not make it to the mass market until the recent decade. What has affected the diffusion of innovation in this sector? Listed in 2018 and 2020 respectively, Nio and Li Auto are two new automakers that have stood out in the recent boom of NEVs and they follow different development paths. Despite the prevalent charging solutions, Nio chooses to work on battery swapping technologies that require heavy investment. While fully electric vehicles are all the rage in the market, Li Auto focuses on extended-range electric vehicles which have unclear prospects. Which of these two paths of innovation diffusion can lead to a stronger competitive edge? What challenges would rise in this process and how should Nio and Li Auto cope with them?
