Abstract
This case examines the digital journey of Chengdu Gioneco Information Technology Co., Ltd. (referred to as “Gioneco”) in the public transportation sector since its establishment in 2010. Gioneco adopted a strategy that combines digital technology with scenario-based operations from the outset. This two-pronged approach was continuously optimized, resulting in an array of innovative products that were the first of their kind globally. An example was Smart Screen. Passengers could also access public transportation by scanning the QR code or using facial recognition, even if they were wearing a mask. These innovations contributed to the development of a constantly evolving “Smart Transportation Management and Service System” within subway and similar settings.
In 2020, Gioneco expanded into the realm of “Smart City” development, achieving significant accomplishments while also facing new market landscapes and competitive challenges. In February 2022, Deng Bo, the leader of the company, was reassessing Gioneco’s steadfast strategy. Specifically, he was considering how the company should refine its balanced development model in the “smart transportation” sector for smart cities. This model combined “digital technology” and “scenario operation.” Additionally, Deng Bo was contemplating which strategic priority should take precedence: “digital technology” or “scenario-based operation?”
