Abstract
Chia Tai Group made continual enhancements to the automation of animal husbandry, the company’s main business, but man still played a main role. However, in its laying-hen farm located at Xifan’ge Village, Yukou Town, Pinggu District, Beijing, Chia Tai Group introduced the use of robots to raise chickens: one henhouse was taken care of by one person and one robot. Humans became the minority in the chicken farm, but Chia Tai still planned to reduce their role further and let robots take on more work. An initial investment of RMB 720 million was earmarked for establishing a more fully automated farm. In order to get this innovation underway and ensure the healthy and sustainable operation of the automated farm, Chia Tai set up the “Four-in-one BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) Property Farming” Mode (hereinafter referred to as the four-in-one mode). Together with Beijing Pinggu District Government, Chia Tai Group established a joint venture company, “Pinggu-Chia Tai Agriculture Investment and Financing Platform” (hereinafter referred to as “Guda”), which took responsibility for financing and project construction. Guda also brought on Bank of Beijing as the main source of financing, while the land for the project came from cooperatives established by the local 1,416 households in Pinggu. Upon its completion, CP Egg Industry Co., Ltd. took on the operation and management of the project. CP Egg achieved an annual ROI of 10%-12% for the investment and financing platform, which used these funds to repay the loan and to pay the rental and other income to locals. The normal operation of the four-in-one mode was based on the profit earned by CP Egg, which allowed funds to be returned to the platform. However, in a confused egg market without common standards, could CP Egg earn profits consistently ? What preparations should Chia Tai make in order to keep the robot chicken farm running continuously?
