This case introduces the educational charity work by Country Garden and its founder Yang Guoqiang. In 2002, Yang donated RMB 265 million to build Guohua Memorial High School, China's first entirely charity-based, tuition-free high school. In 2012, when Yang learnt about the lack of charity support in higher education, he promoted the establishment of Country Garden Vocational College and introduced the company’s industrial resources into the school training. In 2013, he founded the Guoqiang Foundation to manage charity projects in a more professional way, and set the goal of running the foundation independent of Country Garden. Country Garden and Guoqiang Foundation have provided education opportunities for tens of thousands of impoverished students, nurturing talents for both the company and society. But their charity initiatives also faced multiple challenges, such as the limited sources of enrollment and mounting financial pressure faced by Guohua Memorial High School. Therefore, it is important to make long-term plans for the school and decide if it should stay committed to Yang's charitable aspiration or generate more economic returns to achieve the goal of its financial independence. Country Garden's education group Bright Scholar and its vocational college also provided references for Guohua Memorial High School in terms of the development model.
