Abstract

The case was prepared by Associate Professor Zhang Wei of Peking University, Research Fellow Xu Leiping of China Europe International Business School, and Associate Professor Hang Hongli of Shanghai International Studies University with the helpful collaboration and support of Micro-Port Company. The case was developed to provide the basis of classroom discussion rather than to illustrate an effective or ineffective handling of a management situation. With the aim of illustrating an innovation model in an emerging market, this case summarizes the successful launch of drug-eluting stents at MicroPort and the development of innovation capabilities and culture within the company. The case also demonstrates a strategic dilemma after one round of effective technology innovation and, more important, the role of understanding the value system related to health care in sustaining innovation.
