Abstract

This two-case series focuses on a CEO succession issue in China. Piron Smart Technologies Co. Ltd., a private enterprise located in an underdeveloped region of China, is transitioning from a founder-centered to a professionally managed firm. In the summer of 2013, the founder and Chairman of Piron, Jian Wang, made an attempt to hire a senior executive as chief operating officer (COO) from a Western multinational firm, with the promise of promoting him to chief executive officer (CEO) later.
