Abstract
Rural tourism has developed rapidly in recent years. In addition to providing extraordinary travel experiences to tourists, it has also greatly improved the income of local villagers. But at the same time, it is heavily plagued by a high degree of homogenization of offerings and planning in a multitude of villages, leading to an erosion of both economic benefits and the ecological environment. The development model for rural tourism is in urgent need of a breakthrough.
This case describes how Wei Tao, founder of Huangshan Miniholiday Co. Ltd., made explorations into developing rural tourism in Tachuan Village, Anhui Province. Wei Tao hopes to learn from the experience of rural tourism in developed countries to upgrade tourism projects and develop the rural resort industry. Based on his understanding of the rural areas and his study experience in New Zealand, Wei Tao decided to explore an integrated development model. This model will engage local villagers, village collectives, government agencies, external investors, and tourism service providers. How should Weitao play the role of an integrator to better align stakeholders and make an in-depth development of the tourism value of Tachuan? He needs to try hard.
