Abstract
This case focuses on Shanghai Grand Hotel, a state-run and time-honored hotel. In spite of its ever-growing operating revenue, Group President Wang expressed concerns over GM Lin’s leadership style and issues in human resources. This case demonstrates GM Lin’s leadership style with five examples. She was heavy-handed in dealing with issues spanning crumpled tablecloths, a recreation director being late for work, and security guards’ low motivation to work; she was hands-on in everything, with an aim to boosting the hotel’s F&B sales and helping launch new products. This case will enable students to explore different leadership styles and foster class discussion on the motive and scope of application for different leadership styles.
