Abstract
This case introduces NIO's efforts of building a user enterprise. NIO has disrupted the traditional business model of automakers, which is making and selling cars. It claims to be more than an automaker, but a company committed to bringing users a joyful lifestyle by building a community where car users share joys and grow together. NIO has outsourced manufacturing to industry partners while investing heavily in building the user community and creating a joyful lifestyle. NIO reported RMB 2.57 billion, 5.01 billion, 9.64 billion, 11.30 billion, and 5.30 billion respectively in net losses from 2016 to 2020. How is NIO building a user enterprise? Is this model sustainable? As it reaches mainstream users and competes with more rivals in the global market, how can NIO grow together with its users? What will be the boundary of a user enterprise?
