Abstract
In May 2012, Mr. Jia Guang, founder and CEO of CityTogo (operator of a China-based home decoration materials group-buying website, CityTogo.com.cn) had a meeting on team building with his colleagues at CityTogo’s headquarters in Hangzhou. At the meeting, the head of business development again proposed a plan to recruit a large number of salespeople, because “it’s hard to respond quickly to customers’ requirements if the team is too small.” However, the head of human resources rejected the proposal immediately: “It is impossible to do that. Given the high standards we set for the new recruits, it is impossible for us to speed up the recruiting process. In addition, if we fail to hire the right people who can represent the Company and create real value for our customers, it will do more harm to the long-term development of our business.” …
Jia Guang found himself deep in thought after the meeting: in a highly competitive industry, expanding more slowly than competitors means the erosion of market share. Therefore, CityTogo was in need of talent, which had become a bottleneck during its fast expansion.
