Abstract

This two-case series focuses on leadership succession and strategic transformation in a Chinese private business. Case (A) describes the strategic transformation from a traditional massive production model to a personalized customization model. Behind the strategic transformation was the story of the founder, CEO Mr. Daili Zhang, who was willing to hold on to his dream even if none of his employees would. Case (B) illustrates the succession story from the perspective of Ms. Yunlan Zhang, the daughter of Daili Zhang. Though she had performed remarkably as a leader, she understood that the succession was still a work in progress, and that there were various challenges to overcome while implementing the firm’s strategy.
